Beirut: President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, departed Beirut for Ankara on Thursday to engage in discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other senior officials. The talks are set to focus on enhancing bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and regional security.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Aoun emphasized the potential for Lebanon-Turkey relations to reach a new level, with Lebanon relying on Ankara to aid in its economic recovery. He highlighted Turkey's NATO membership and extensive regional ties as key factors in promoting international support for the framework established in Washington, as well as encouraging all parties to adhere to its conditions.

Aoun reiterated Lebanon's dedication to the agreement, contingent upon a complete Israeli withdrawal coordinated with the Lebanese Army's deployment, a permanent cessation of attacks and violations in southern Lebanon, and the establishment of an effective international verification mechanism. Discussions will also include the expansion of Turkish military aid and training for the Lebanese Army to bolster its presence in sensitive southern regions. Aoun clarified that any Turkish support would supplement, not replace, existing U.S. and international assistance.

He further stressed that decisions regarding sovereignty, security, and foreign relations are the sole responsibility of Lebanon's constitutional institutions. Aoun underscored the necessity of sustained internal dialogue over confrontation to consolidate state control over weapons.
