Tyre:Beirut Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy has reiterated the League's commitment to supporting Lebanon, focusing on strengthening state institutions and facilitating the return of displaced residents. Fahmy's remarks came during a visit to South Lebanon, where he was joined by Social Affairs Minister Haneen Sayed.
According to National news agency - Lebanon, Fahmy toured the Benoit Barakat Barracks in Tyre and met with Brigadier General Nicolas Tabet, the commander of the Lebanese Army's South Litani Sector, along with other senior military officers. During the visit, Tabet emphasized the detrimental impact of ongoing Israeli attacks, which have led to widespread destruction, displaced thousands, and hindered the safe return of residents to their villages. He also noted the challenges faced by the Lebanese Army in fully deploying across southern territories up to the internationally recognized border.
Tabet called for a robust response from Arab and international communities to end Israeli aggression, ensure a full withdrawal from Lebanese lands, and uphold Lebanon's sovereignty in line with international resolutions. He reaffirmed the army's dedication to maintaining civil peace and extending state authority, while also appealing for Arab support in rebuilding war-damaged areas and strengthening security arrangements post-UNIFIL mandate, as per UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Fahmy condemned the Israeli attacks on civilians in South Lebanon and reaffirmed the Arab League's political support for Lebanese sovereignty and institutions. He highlighted a comprehensive resolution adopted by the League's ministerial council in September, addressing the crisis in Lebanon and its root causes. Fahmy underscored the importance of translating Arab solidarity into tangible diplomatic, financial, and institutional aid.
During his visit to the areas of Zawtar and Nabatieh, Fahmy witnessed significant destruction and accused Israel of systematically dismantling residential communities and displacing civilians. He assured continued collaboration with Lebanese authorities to gather support for reconstruction efforts, strengthen the army, and aid in the return of displaced families. Fahmy affirmed that the Arab League's dedication to Lebanon signals the start of an ongoing effort to address the country's challenges.
