Beirut: Lebanese Forces party leader Samir Geagea expressed concerns that if the government continues to hesitate in establishing a functional state in Lebanon, it could face dire consequences. Geagea emphasized that the responsibility for Lebanon potentially facing instability once more rests on the government’s shoulders.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Geagea highlighted the statements made by US envoy to Syria and Lebanon, Tom Barrack, discussing the need for Lebanon to organize its political and institutional structures. He noted that international politics, supported by a near-consensus of Arab countries, is focused on stabilizing the region by addressing abnormal conditions in countries like Iran and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in Turkey. Geagea warned that countries unable to restore order and operate as viable states might find themselves marginalized.
Reflecting on the early 1990s, Geagea recalled how Lebanon, after the civil war, became influenced by Assad’s Syria due to deficiencies in the Taif state. He questioned whether a similar situation could arise again if Lebanese authorities do not address the nation’s current shortcomings, potentially pushing international and Arab politics toward another intervention.
Geagea stressed the importance of the current period for Lebanon, warning that continued inaction by the authorities could set the country back by decades. He urged the Lebanese government to act swiftly and decisively to transform Lebanon into a stable and functional state that can secure the interests of all its constituencies.
He concluded by warning that without these necessary changes, Lebanon risks remaining a conflict zone and facing further external violations.
