Geneva: Lebanon's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Caroline Ziadeh, has taken a formal stance at the Human Rights Council to address the targeting and killing of Lebanese journalists due to Israeli attacks. This comes following hostilities that erupted on March 2, 2026.

According to National Nws Aency - Lebanon, Ambassador Ziadeh sent a letter to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk. The letter highlights documentation from the Ministry of Information of Lebanon, detailing a series of Israeli attacks specifically targeting journalists. The letter outlines that these incidents form part of a broader pattern of attacks on civilians, including media professionals. Among the victims were Lebanese journalist Ghada El Dayekh of Sawt Al-Farah, and media professional Suzanne Khalil, affiliated with Al-Nour Radio and Al-Manar TV, who both lost their lives in these attacks.

Ambassador Ziadeh emphasized that these actions are grave violations of International Humanitarian Law. She cited specific articles from the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute that prohibit violence against civilians and protect journalists in conflict zones. The letter underscores that such protections are part of customary international humanitarian law and are binding on all parties.

The Ambassador pointed out that, since October 13, 2023, Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of 28 Lebanese journalists, including various media professionals, with no accountability to date. She urged the international community to prevent the normalization of such acts and to uphold the protections afforded to journalists during armed conflict.

In her concluding remarks, Ambassador Ziadeh called for Israel to be compelled to cease these violations and to comply fully with its obligations under International Humanitarian Law. She stressed that intervention by the High Commissioner could reaffirm the protection owed to journalists and contribute to effective investigations toward accountability.
