MPs Advocate for Continued UNIFIL Presence in South Lebanon

Beirut:Several Members of Parliament have called on the United Nations Security Council to reevaluate the timeline for the withdrawal of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) from South Lebanon.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, MPs Melhem Khalaf, Firas Hamdan, Michel Moussa, Najat Aoun, Paula Yacoubian, Adnan Traboulsi, and Ibrahim Mneimneh are urging the reconsideration of UN Security Council Resolution 2790. They advocate for maintaining UNIFIL's presence in South Lebanon until Israeli forces withdraw and the Lebanese state can exert full control through its army.

MP Khalaf emphasized that an early withdrawal of UNIFIL might lead to a security and humanitarian vacuum in the region. He warned that it could complicate the deployment of state authorities and put civilian lives at risk.

The group of MPs plans to submit a legal memorandum requesting a UN assessment before any withdrawal takes place and calls for stronger support for UNIFIL's monitoring and coordination efforts in the area.
