El-alamein: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy in Egypt's coastal city of El-Alamein, Turkish diplomatic sources said. The meeting was part of a broader diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening ties between Turkey and Egypt.
According to TRTworld.com, Fidan also had discussions with Major General Hassan Mahmoud Rashad, the director of Egypt's General IntelligenceService. The Turkish Foreign Minister's two-day visit to Egypt includes a scheduled meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and senior Egyptian officials. These meetings are geared towards enhancing bilateral relations, reviewing the status of ongoing agreements, and fostering mutual investment to achieve a bilateral trade volume target of $15 billion.
During his visit, Fidan will focus on cooperation in various sectors, including hydrocarbons, electricity grid integration, energy infrastructure, and mining. There will also be discussions on advancing military and defense industry cooperation and emphasizing the importance of addressing regional issues through dialogue and diplomacy, based on regional ownership and shared responsibility.
Fidan will also highlight Turkey's commitment to continuing joint efforts both bilaterally and through multilateral platforms such as the R4 initiative, which includes the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. The visit includes the second meeting of the Turkey-Egypt Joint Planning Group, co-chaired by Fidan and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, which will review the outcomes of the previous High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting held in Cairo and prepare for a forthcoming meeting in Turkey in 2028.
Key regional issues are also on the agenda, with Fidan set to express support for diplomatic efforts to restore the ceasefire between the US and Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He will stress the need to halt ongoing attacks in Gaza, implement the ceasefire, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. The minister will exchange views on the Gaza Peace Plan's second phase and Israel's attacks on Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria.
Fidan will advocate for continued efforts to ensure stability and security in Libya, based on the country's territorial integrity and political unity. He will also reaffirm Turkey's support for Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. Lastly, Fidan will share assessments on the roles Turkey and Egypt can play in establishing lasting peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
