Beirut: UNIFIL Spokesperson Kandice Ardiel, on Tuesday, emphasized on the “X” platform the crucial role that journalists play in conflict zones, often facing significant risks. Recent incidents in south Lebanon have highlighted the perilous nature of this profession.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Ardiel recently held a meeting with Lebanon’s Minister of Information, Dr. Paul Morcos, to address the safety concerns of journalists operating in the south. During the meeting, Dr. Morcos revealed that eight Lebanese reporters have lost their lives in Israeli strikes since March. Ardiel underscored that journalists should not be targeted based on their political views or the nature of their work, as they are not legitimate targets.

Despite hopes for a more stable environment, the situation in south Lebanon remains volatile and unpredictable, necessitating precautions. Ardiel suggested that UNIFIL could offer to notify both the Lebanese and Israeli armies about the locations and planned movements of journalists to enhance their safety. While there are no absolute guarantees, this measure represents a practical step that peacekeepers can take to mitigate risks.
