Beirut: President of the Republic General, Joseph Aoun, on Monday informed Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto that Lebanon welcomes the participation of Italy and other European countries in any force that may replace UNIFIL in southern Lebanon after its withdrawal in 2027. This move aims to support the Lebanese Army in maintaining security and stability along the southern border following Israel's withdrawal from occupied hills and territories.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun, speaking at Baabda Palace with Defense Minister Major General Michel Menassa present, emphasized Lebanon's strategy of negotiation. By appointing a former ambassador to lead the Lebanese delegation to the Mechanism Committee, Lebanon aims to stop hostilities, secure Israeli withdrawal, return detainees, and allow southern residents to return to their villages. He highlighted Lebanon's expectation of positive steps from Israel and reliance on friendly countries, such as Italy, to aid in successful negotiations.

President Aoun reiterated Lebanon's commitment to peace, emphasizing the importance of security, border protection, and the extension of state sovereignty. These tasks are entrusted to the Lebanese Army in cooperation with friendly states. He noted the Army's role as the backbone of stability in Lebanon and the wider region, expressing deep appreciation for any Italian support to the Lebanese Army and armed forces.

Minister Crosetto, on his part, extended holiday congratulations to President Aoun and reaffirmed Italy's full support for Lebanon, particularly in maintaining security and stability in the south. He expressed Italy's commitment to keeping forces in the area of international operations south of the Litani after UNIFIL's withdrawal, alongside other European countries, to support the Lebanese Army. Crosetto confirmed that Italian assistance to the Army will continue as agreed during his talks with the Lebanese defense minister.
