Beirut: The Brazilian government has expressed its support for the renewal of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate by the UN Security Council. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release emphasizing the importance of UNIFIL’s role in monitoring the situation in southern Lebanon, especially during times of regional instability.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Brazil played a significant role in UNIFIL’s Maritime Task Force from 2011 to 2021, contributing nearly 4,000 military personnel to the mission. Currently, Brazil has 11 personnel deployed within the force. The Brazilian government highlighted the central role of the UN Security Council in maintaining international peace and security, stressing that the missions should conclude only after fully achieving their mandates.

The press release also pointed out the challenges in fulfilling the objectives of Resolution 1701 (2006), citing Israel’s occupation of Lebanese territories and violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty as significant hurdles. The Brazilian government has called for enhanced dialogue between the involved parties to adhere to the resolution’s terms and work towards lasting peace in Lebanon and the surrounding region.
