EU High Representative Discusses Key Regional Issues with Egypt’s Foreign Minister

Beirut: High Representative Kaja Kallas expressed her appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by Egypt’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, during their recent meeting. The discussions covered a range of important topics, including the strategic relationship between the European Union and Egypt, regional security concerns, and the situation in Gaza.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Kallas emphasized the significance of the EU-Egypt partnership, which has been strengthened since the signing of the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership last year. Both parties are committed to building on their collaboration in areas such as political relations, trade, migration, security, and education. Kallas acknowledged Egypt’s contributions to regional stability, especially amid recent security developments.

The situation in Gaza was a focal point of the meeting. Kallas highlighted Egypt’s pivotal role in ceasefire negotiations and expressed the EU’s gratitude for these efforts. She condemned the resumption of hostilities by Israel, which has resulted in significant loss of life, and called for an immediate end to the violence. Kallas stressed the need for Hamas to release hostages and for Israel to reinstate humanitarian aid to Gaza. She also discussed the Arab plan for Gaza’s reconstruction, acknowledging Egypt’s vital role in facilitating talks.

Kallas affirmed the EU’s readiness to support Gaza’s reconstruction with a financial package but noted the need for clarity on cost-sharing, security arrangements, and governance. The EU remains committed to a two-state solution as the only path to lasting peace and opposes Hamas’s involvement in Gaza’s future governance.

The discussions also touched on Syria, where recent violence has created a fragile situation. Kallas reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting Syria’s recovery, highlighting a recent pledge of 5.8 billion euros for the country’s transition. The EU advocates for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned process to achieve stability.

In response to questions, Kallas clarified the EU’s stance on Gaza’s governance, stating that Hamas should have no role in its future governance. She also addressed the EU’s efforts to pressure Israel to cease hostilities and emphasized the importance of adhering to humanitarian law and ensuring aid reaches those in need.

Kallas’s visit to Egypt underscores the EU’s commitment to working with regional partners for stability and peace. She expressed optimism for continued cooperation with Egypt and other stakeholders to address the region’s challenges.
