Beirut: The Kataeb Party's Political Bureau held its weekly meeting chaired by party leader Samy Gemayel to discuss recent political and security developments. Following the meeting, the bureau issued a statement expressing its stance on the ongoing political situation in Lebanon.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Political Bureau reaffirmed its support for the Lebanese negotiating delegation involved in the Rome talks. The bureau also expressed its backing for President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam amidst what it described as Hezbollah's efforts to undermine the executive authority and the framework agreement established during the Washington talks. These actions, according to the bureau, are aimed at keeping Lebanon embroiled in regional conflicts and serving as a bargaining tool for Iran.
The bureau expressed optimism that the Rome talks would lead to an agreement on the implementation mechanisms and timeline for the framework deal. It emphasized that such an agreement would facilitate a faster Israeli withdrawal, end the ongoing war, initiate reconstruction efforts, and enable displaced residents to return to their villages.
The statement also highlighted that the campaign against the framework agreement lacks constitutional grounds. The decision represents the Lebanese State, made by the executive authority in a process involving all parties in the government. Those currently opposing the agreement are part of the government that initially approved it and obtained parliament's confidence based on its policy statement.
The Political Bureau emphasized that the framework agreement aligns with both President Aoun's inaugural speech and the government's policy statement. It underscores the importance of restoring the State's sovereign decision-making authority, with all weapons and decisions on war and peace under the State's control.
The bureau criticized ongoing attacks on the agreement as political maneuvering intended for domestic audiences and foreign allegiances. It asserted that opponents have not provided any credible alternatives beyond continued conflict. The bureau called for support of the Lebanese State, which it views as the legitimate entity capable of protecting Lebanese interests through constitutional legitimacy and international partnerships.
