Patriarch Aphrem II Appeals to Pope Leo for Support Amid Regional Transformations

Beirut: Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II made a heartfelt appeal to Pope Leo during an ecumenical gathering at Martyrs’ Square, emphasizing the critical timing of the Pope’s visit amidst significant changes in the region. Addressing the gathering this afternoon, Patriarch Aphrem II expressed the importance of the occasion, noting the historical context in which it is occurring.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Patriarch Aphrem II highlighted the unique social fabric of the Levant, describing it as a place defined not by borders but by a rich tapestry of social relations and shared memories. He stressed that coexistence in Lebanon is a ‘dialogue of life’ grounded in mutual respect and that the true essence of humanity is realized through this mutual respect between individuals.

Patriarch Aphrem II further articulated that coexistence is not merely a slogan but a shared responsibility, with humanity at the heart of this unity. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the region, expressing confidence in Pope Leo’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of the afflicted East. Through the Pope’s relationships and prayers, Patriarch Aphrem II believes a free and dignified life can be ensured for all people in the region.

In his concluding remarks to Pope Leo, Patriarch Aphrem II called for collective prayers, hoping the Pope’s visit would become a beacon of hope.
