Baabda: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, informed US Senator Ronny Jackson of Texas, during a meeting at Baabda Palace attended by US Ambassador Lisa Johnson, that Lebanon’s stance on border stability is “firm and final.” Aoun emphasized the necessity of Israeli withdrawal from the hilltops and the return of Lebanese prisoners detained in the last conflict for stability in the south and along the borders.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, President Aoun highlighted that the Lebanese army is deployed in the villages and towns vacated by Israeli forces and is prepared to station along the border. He noted ongoing cooperation with international forces in the south to implement Resolution 1701 and the agreement reached on November 27. Aoun stated that Israel’s continued occupation of hilltops breaches this agreement and urged countries, particularly the United States, to pressure Israel to comply fully.
President Aoun reassured Senator Jackson that the Lebanese Army is fulfilling its duties in coordination with UNIFIL and dispelled rumors of any negligence in implementing the agreed terms. He expressed gratitude for US support to the Lebanese Army and called for increased assistance to enhance the army’s readiness in terms of equipment and personnel, hoping for a positive response from the US administration and Congress.
Senator Jackson congratulated President Aoun on his election and affirmed US support for Lebanon as it enters a new phase of stability. He pledged to work with US President Donald Trump and Congress to provide necessary support to the Lebanese army, acknowledging its significant efforts and broad support within and outside Lebanon. Jackson emphasized the shared interest of Lebanon and the United States in regional peace and prosperity.
Following the meeting, Jackson expressed optimism about the potential for a new era of peace in the Middle East. He reiterated the US commitment to mediate between Lebanese and Israeli leadership to ensure both countries securely control their borders, fostering a sense of safety and normalcy.
