Beirut: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on Tuesday stressed to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and former Iraqi President, Barham Salih, that "the Israeli attacks on Lebanon have caused a major humanitarian catastrophe, resulting in the displacement of more than one million Lebanese from the targeted areas. Lebanon needs urgent assistance, especially since the repercussions of the displacement will remain significant even after a ceasefire."
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Salih said after the meeting that "he came to Lebanon to convey a message of solidarity and support for the Lebanese people and the state during this difficult time." He also noted that he witnessed firsthand the scale of destruction in Beirut and the suffering of civilians, with more than one million displaced due to the war.
He added: "During our meeting with His Excellency the President, we affirmed the international community's and the UNHCR's support for Lebanon, as well as our partnership with the government to assist the displaced. We also stressed the need to mobilize international support to address the growing humanitarian needs."
He emphasized that "humanitarian aid is essential, but the fundamental solution remains ending the war and achieving lasting peace." He also affirmed "working to provide assistance to the displaced Lebanese, in cooperation with Lebanese authorities and international organizations."
