Beirut: The General Confederation of Lebanese Workers (CGTL) announced Friday that, following intensive and positive consultations with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, it was agreed to reconsider Decree No. 3214 on the recently approved tax increases.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the union said a meeting with its leadership will be held at the Grand Serail on Monday, June 29, to develop a comprehensive approach to the "catastrophic repercussions" of the decree. The issue will then be reviewed during the next Cabinet session scheduled for Thursday, July 2nd.
The union added that it had also contacted Environment Minister Taara El-Zein within the same framework, stressing that the Lebanese people should not be burdened with the consequences of a decree which it described as "unfair and unjust" toward all segments of society amid severe economic and social conditions.
Finally, the union thanked Economic Parliamentary Committee Head, MP Farid Boustany, for his swift response in calling for an emergency committee meeting on Tuesday to address the decree. The CGTL has been invited to attend the session.
