Beirut: On the occasion of the first anniversary of Joseph Aoun's election as President of the Republic, Minister of Information, Paul Morcos, highlighted the transformative impact of Aoun's leadership on Lebanon's political landscape. The election marked the end of a two-and-a-half-year presidential vacuum that had led to severe financial and political turmoil. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun, a former army commander, has been proactive in addressing Lebanon's critical issues despite challenging circumstances. His presidency, marked by a firm resolve, has seen the implementation of a strategic roadmap aimed at strengthening state institutions. This approach was reflected in the priorities set by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's government. Since January 9, 2025, the government has focused on restoring public trust and rebuilding Lebanon's regional relationships. President Aoun's diplomatic visits to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations have been pivotal in reconnecting Lebanon with i ts Arab neighbors and enhancing regional cooperation. The renewed openness is also evident in the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV to Lebanon. Domestically, President Aoun's administration has tackled significant issues including the containment of arms in the north and securing borders to combat drug trafficking. Institutional improvements include resuming appointments for key judicial and administrative positions, notably at Télé Liban, and holding municipal elections for the first time in nine years. Financially, the government has passed critical banking reforms, addressing long-standing issues such as banking secrecy and restructuring. These reforms are foundational steps towards financial stability, although more work remains. Additionally, the passage of pivotal laws, including the Law on the Independence of the Judiciary and the Media Law, signifies progress in modernizing Lebanon's legal framework. The first year of President Aoun's term concludes with notable movement across Lebanon's borders and a significant return of displaced Syrians, underscoring Lebanon's resilience despite ongoing regional threats.
