Beirut: UNESCO welcomes the adoption by the Lebanese Parliament of the new Media Law, marking an important milestone in Lebanon's efforts to modernize its media legislation and strengthen freedom of expression, press freedom, and the safety of journalists.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, over the past years, UNESCO has supported the Ministry of Information in relaunching national consultations on media law reform, providing technical and legal expertise and facilitating dialogue with national stakeholders. This support helped advance the reform process and align the proposed framework with international norms and standards, contributing to the submission of the draft law to Parliament.

UNESCO highlights provisions aimed at promoting a safe and responsible media environment and addressing incitement to hatred and violence. Their implementation should remain grounded in respect of freedom of expression, access to information, and the safety of journalists, in line with international human rights standards.

UNESCO congratulates all those who contributed to this landmark reform and stands ready to support the Government of Lebanon in the upcoming steps to implement the new law and further advance a diverse, independent, pluralistic, and safe media environment.
