Beirut: The European Union and its Member States have expressed approval for Lebanon's recent adoption of a new media law, as announced in a joint statement by the EU's delegation and the diplomatic missions of EU Member States in Beirut.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the newly adopted media law is designed to bring about critical reforms that aim to bolster media freedom and ensure the protection of freedom of expression in Lebanon. Key aspects of the law include safeguarding journalists, decriminalizing offenses related to publication, setting clear criteria for prosecuting hate speech, and enhancing transparency in media ownership and financing.

Civil society and media representatives have emphasized the importance of implementing the law in a manner that remains true to its original objectives and aligns with international standards. The European Union and its Member States have reiterated their commitment to working closely with Lebanon in upholding fundamental freedoms, human rights, and the rule of law.
