Beirut: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, made a phone call to the Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), General Diodato Abagnara, to check on the safety of peacekeepers after they were targeted by an Israeli drone while removing roadblocks near the southern town of Marwahin, which hindered access to UNIFIL positions along the border.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, President Aoun expressed Lebanon’s strong condemnation of what he described as the most serious attack on UNIFIL since the ceasefire agreement last November. This incident comes less than a week after the UN Security Council extended UNIFIL’s mandate until the end of 2027.
He stressed that such attacks confirm Israel’s continued defiance of international will, particularly recent calls to end hostilities against Lebanon, withdraw Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territory in the south, release Lebanese detainees, and fully implement Resolution 1701.
